Final post.I started this boat last April. I had a commission from a fellow in New York. The club in Sag Harbor NY sails a modified Euro Moth which they call an E-Dingy. We decided on a John Shelley design. This design came from the Mark III plans developed in 1965. I'm very pleased the way this boat turned out.

Off she goes. Heading to her new home in Sag Harbor, NY.
This was designed to take all the turning blocks for the sail controls. I modified that just a bit for the vang control and mounted that on front of the mast with small control lines holding the blocks. It's all together and it functions prefectly. We have outhaul, cunnangham, and boom vang. I need to get two blocks on the boom for the main sheet. Other than that the boat is race ready!
Nice DM1 Fit right out of the box. Now for some controls and she is a done boat! I also had a chance to try one of my sails and got some of the controls mocked up. Things are looking good. The outhaul system and boom vang work great.
That job then turned into a completed boat which is what we have now. I just received the final commission to deliver a race ready boat. That means sourcing a mast and boom and all the other goobers that make the boat go. This final job shouldn't take too long if I can get a mast delivered.

Also, the customer wanted a white Dagger board! I removed the black paint from the sunfish blade and underneath was a white board! Now we have matching blades!
We have 4 inspection plates. One for the bow section, one for the aft end and one for each seat tank. We have a Laser rudder and a Sunfish daggerboard. I made the tiller and hiking stick. I found a small cleat for the rudder downhaul. A 3/8 inch pin for the mast support. The center traveler came from my box of parts. The last picture shows the CB brake and the hiking strap. Just add a mast, boom, sheet and sail!

First one down from NY get's her!

Ha, just kidding...

One final note... This boat weighs 60.8 pounds!!!
It's would not dry. Don't know what was the matter. I called the paint co and the only thing they would do is check the batch #'s and see if anyone else had a complaint. They also offered to send my money back. I took that option. It took a can of mineral spirits an a lot of elbows to get the old varnish off. Got different varnish. I'll know tomorrow if it's me or the paint!
I cut the holes for all the inspection ports. Now it's on to the finish. Two coats of resin over the entire boat. The bottom gets white paint. I'll varnish the decks.
I got both inner and outer rub rails made. I used cherry wood. It's a hard wood and looks good. I fitted the inner rails. I'll get the outer rails done next. I have about 20 minutes more sanding to get the outer rails fitted just right. The inner rails provide two functions. They cushion your legs from the sharp seat sides and they provide a hand hold for when you need to get back into the boat.
Gave me a good view of the rocker. This is going to be a fast boat. I'm filling in all the little holes and sanding rough spots. Also got the CB trunk opened at the bottom.
The only other piece of wood are the rub rails and the inner seat rails. I have them made but they will be the last part to go on.
This is one sweet boat. Oh, as she sits she weighs 52 pounds. I got 8 pounds of fit and finish to play with.
I laminated two spruce sticks together. I wanted two chunks rather than one thick stick. Each end is glued to the seat supports and is backed with a 4 mil plate and then screwed into the ends. Three screws at the CB case. Not going anywhere.
Took a while to align the fwd deck to the seat deck but after a while it worked. Got to put in the traveler brace prior to the seat decks. I'll get that done this weekend. Hope I remember where to put the mast!
I'm using 4 mil ocume for the seating area. The seats take a beating so 4 mil is the way to go. I'll address the backdeck next.
I also installed gusset backings for the chainplates. I gave them ample room just incase the stays need to be moved back along the boat. There is about 5 inches of adjustment. After they dry the fwd decks are ready to go on.
Some people have been known to put there foot/knee through the boat. Not this one. That yellow stuff is Kevlar. light weight and tough.
I also cut out the rough fwd deck.
The fwd structure is in the boat. I don't like to skimp on this part of the boat because it takes all the load from the mast. The two stringers from the center section to the shear serves two functions. First it provided lateral support for the kingstud. Second it provides backing for deck hardware. It's where you put all your turning blocks for sail controls The big gusset provides stiffness for the hull
I used 4 1/4 inch cedar strips. I made one to mirror the shear. When that dried I made another one using that first one as a pattern. Got two symmetrical seat rails. I set them in the boat and we have a nice fair curve from the back deck to the fwd bulkhead. I made a poster board template for the seat tanks.
I used poster board to get a rough fit. Then transferred the poster board to the wood. Once the general shape was made it just took constant removal and shaving, replacing until it fit. I put a 1-1/2 inch arch in the fwd bulkhead. Boat looks good and we are on weight target.
